Edmonton

Alberta's capital city is probably best known as a city of festivals, the two most famous being the Edmonton Folk Music Festival and the Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival. Edmonton is also a launching pad for northern Alberta adventure.

Ottawa

Ottawa Canada - Ottawa Canada Basics

Ottawa's Location:
Ottawa, Canada (pronounced Odd-a-wa), is the nation's capital located in the northeastern region of the province of Ontario. Just across the Ottawa River from Ottawa is the province of Quebec. Montreal is under a three hour drive away.

Ottawa for Visitors:
Ottawa is a charming city to visit; it has a cultured, yet friendly atmosphere and is steeped in history. So much of Ottawa’s allure is due to the well-planned city that is pedestrian friendly and human in scale. The many historic buildings – most prominently the Parliament Building and the Château Laurier – are lovingly preserved. Other Ottawa attractions include the Rideau Canal - which in below freezing weather turns into the the world's biggest skating rink - the National Gallery of Canada and the Canadian Museum of Civilization. Events and holidays are celebrated in style, with Canada Day, the Tulip Festival and Winterlude three annual Ottawa highlights.

Though Ottawa feels like the wealthy city it is, it remains one of the most affordable for visitors.

Climate:
Ottawa temperatures can range from 33°C (91°F) in summer to -40°C (-40°F) in winter, with average summer temperatures around 20°C (68°F) and average winter temperatures around -10°C (14°F).

Language:
English and French are the predominant languages spoken in Ottawa. However, the city is multicultural, with approximately a quarter of the population born in other countries.

Population:
Approximately 865,000 people live within the city limits

Economy:
Ottawa's economy is relatively stable and centred around two major industries, government and high-tech. The average family income is the highest of Canada's largest cities and the quality of life ranked among the top 20 in the world (Mercer Human Resources International).

Calgary

The Calgary Stampede put Calgary on the map and the city's role as host of the 1988 Winter Olympics solidified its place as one of Canada's top destinations. The Old West spirit is alive and well in Calgary where cowboy hats and line dancing are always in fashion. The city has enjoyed great prosperity since the 1990s and grown significantly. Calgary's proximity to Banff and other ski hills, icefields and other grand scenery is a big part of Calgary's draw.

Quebec City - the official capital of the province of Quebec - offers an experience unlike almost any other in North America. Quebec City’s Old Town itself is a work of art: Cobblestone walkways, well-preserved 17th century architecture, café culture and the only North American fortress walls that still exist north of Mexico -- all of which has given it status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls, Canada, is home to the Horseshoe Falls, the most powerful waterfall in North America and possibly the best-known in the world.

The town is built up around the Falls themselves - you'll find plenty of overpriced trinket shops and tour groups being herded about.

Niagara Falls is probably best known as a honeymoon destination, attracting millions of newlywed or just plain romantic couples each year.

With the addition of a new casino resort in 2004, fine hotels and restaurants quickly followed, elevating the city's character; however Niagara Falls is primarily a tourist attraction.

Location - Where is Niagara Falls

Canada's Niagara Falls is just across the water from Niagara Falls, New York. It is 15 or 20 minutes from Buffalo and an hour and a half to two hour drive from Toronto.

Montreal

City Profile for Montreal, Quebec

Montreal
or Montréal (French prononciation: Mawn-ray-al)
Montreal is unique North American cities, comparable perhaps to New Orleans in depth and pervasiveness of European history. Visitors can enjoy a modern city with all its conveniences, outstanding shopping and dining, but also get a taste of Europe and a glimpse back into Canada's rich French heritage.

Montrealers also know how to have a good time and approach most things they do with a joie de vivre. The uncalculated chic and spontaneity of Montreal differs from Toronto, which tends to be a little stuffier.

Montreal History

The city of Montreal has a history dating back to 1642 when settlers from France landed at the edge of St. Lawrence River. The group, led by Paul de Chomedey de Maisonneuve, of Champagne, founded Ville Marie - later re-named Montreal - and began to build a model Catholic community and convert the natives. The waterside town became a major trading and military post and at one time even housed Canada's parliament.

Montreal grew inland, attracting immigrants from England, Scotland and Ireland. Today, the city is as diverse as Toronto or New York City. Seventeenth century Montreal is still apparent today in what is known as Old Montreal or Vieux-Montréal; it has retained much of its charm through cobblestone streets and original architecture.

Toronto is comparable to Chicago or New York in that all are big, lively, multicultural cities that offer a lot to visitors. Toronto is Canada's largest city and financial center. Although not the national capital, Toronto is the Ontario provincial capital and probably the best-known city in Canada, in large part due to the Toronto International Film Festival and its popularity as a theatre destination.
